Q. Mole fraction of toluene in the vapour which is in equilibrium with a solution containing benzene and toluene having $2$ moles each is Given: Saturation vapour pressure of benzene = $120 \,torr$ Saturation vapour pressure of toluene = $80\, torr$

Solutions

Solution:

Total vapour pressure
$=\frac{1}{2}\times120+\frac{1}{2}\times 80=100$ torr
$y_{A}\times 100 = x_{A} P^{\circ}_{A}$ as per Raoult’s law
or $y_{t}=\frac{1}{2}\times \frac{80}{100}=0.4$
