Insect resistant genes are found in the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis. The cry gene of B. thuringiensis produces a protein which forms crystalline inclusions in the bacterial spores. These crystal proteins are responsible for insecticidal activities of the bacterial strains. The antibiotic polymyxin B is commercially produced from Bacillus polymyxa.
