Q. Maximum number of electrons in a subshell with l = 3 and n = 4 is

Solution:

Quantam number $n$ represents the main energy level and $I$ represents the subshell. For $n$ = 4 and $l$ = 3, the subshell is 4$f$. In $f$-subshell there are 7 orbitals and each orbital accommodates a maximum of two electrons. Hence maximum number of electron in 4$f$-subshell = 7 $\times$ 2 = 14.
