The carbon dioxide assimilation during photosynthesis is of two main types. In those plants in which the first product of carbon dioxide fixation is 3-phosphoglyceric acid (a C3 acid)is known as the C3 pathway or Calvin cycle, and those in which the first product is oxaloacetic acid (a C4 acid) is the C4 pathway. CAM (Crassulacean Acid Metabolism) pathway is a method of carbon fixation evolved by some plants in dry circumstances where stomata open during the night to take in carbon dioxide to prevent water loss. Kalanchoe belongs to family Crassulaceae and shows the CAM pathway of carbon fixation. Triticum (wheat plant) uses the standard method of Carbon fixation that is the C3 pathway. Maize (Zea mays) shows the C4 pathway as it grows in dry tropical climates.
