Q. Match the column I with column II to identify the products of oxidation of alkanes and mark the appropriate choice.
Column I Column II
(A) $(CH_3)_3CH + 2O_2 \xrightarrow[(O)]{KMnO_4}$ (i) $HCOOH + H_2O$
(B) $2CH_4 + O_2 \xrightarrow[100\,atm]{Cu/523\,K}$ (ii) $(CH_3)_3COH$
(C) $CH_4 + O_2 \xrightarrow[\Delta]{Mo_2O_3}$ (iii) $2CH_3OH$
(D) $CH_4 + \frac{3}{2} O_2 \xrightarrow{(CH_3COO)_2Mn}$ (iv) $HCHO + H_2O$

Hydrocarbons

Solution:

(A) $CH _{4}+2 O _{2} \xrightarrow[{(O)}]{KMnO_4}CO _{2}+2 H _{2} O$ (ii)
The above reaction is complete oxidation or combustion of alkanes.
(B) $2 CH _{4}+ O _{2} \xrightarrow[{100\,atm}]{Cu/523\,K} 2 CH _{3} OH$ (iii)
When a mixture of methane and oxygen is passed through copper tubes at $523\, K$ and $100\, atm$, Methyl alcohol is produced.
It is an example of controlled oxidation.
(C) $CH _{4}+ O _{2} \xrightarrow[{\Delta}]{MO_2O_3} HCHO + H _{2} O$ (iv)
Products formed in the above reaction are $HCHO$ and $H _{2} O$ i.e, formaldehyde and water.
It is also an example of controlled oxidation.
(D) $CH _{4}+\frac{3}{2} O _{2} \xrightarrow{\left( CH _{3} COO \right)_{2} Mn }HCOOH + H _{2} O$
