Human erythrocytes (red blood cells) are non-nucleated, circular, biconcave cells which transport oxygen to the tissues of the body and carry carbon dioxide from them to the lungs. They are formed in the red bone marrow of long bones and have a lifespan of 120 days. They possess the red-coloured pigment called haemoglobin, which acts as a buffer and maintains the pH of the blood. Erythrocytes also maintain the viscosity of the blood.
