Q. It is possible to obtain oxygen from air by fractional distillation because

AMUAMU 2000

Solution:

Fractional distillation is applicable to separate those component whose boiling points are very close to one another, ie, differ by $10$ to $15\, K$. The boiling point of oxygen is $90 K$ and boiling point of nitrogen is $77 \,K$. Therefore, it is possible to obtain oxygen from air by fractional distillation.
