When phenol reacts with chloroform and aqueous $NaOH$ solution, it give salicylaldehyde.
$CHCl _{3}+ OH ^{-} H _{2} O + CCl _{3}^{-} CCl _{3}^{-} \rightarrow \underset{\text { dichlorocarbene }}{ CCl _{2}}+ Cl ^{-}$
