Q. In the reaction, $2Ag+ 2H_{2}SO_{4} \to Ag_{2}SO_{4}+ 2H_{2}O + SO_{2}$ the sulphuric acid acts as

Redox Reactions

Solution:

$2Ag + 2H_{2}SO_{4} \to Ag_{2}SO_{4} + 2H_{2}O + SO_{2}$
$H_{2}SO_{4}$ is acting as acid
Simultaneously, oxidation number of S changes from + 6 to $+4 (SO_{2})$
$H_{2}\overset{+6}{SO_{4}} \to \overset{+4}{SO_{2}}$, thus acting as oxidising agent also.
