Q. In the hexaploid wheat, the haploid $(n)$ and basic $(X)$ numbers of chromosomes are

AIPMTAIPMT 2007Principles of Inheritance and Variation

Solution:

Hexaploid wheat is a result of allopolyploidy induced by doubling the chromosome number of the hybrid produced by crossing two different plants. In hexaploid wheat triticale 2n = 6x = 42. So jc stands for basic chromosome number and n for haploid chromosome number. So, n = 21 and x = 7 for hexaploid wheat.
