It is a nucleophilic addition reaction. Nitriles being moderate electrophiles, attacked by nucleophilic Grignard reagent to give an imine salt. Since imines are not electrophilic enough under basic conditions further attack doesn't take place.Acidic hydrolysis of this imine salt leads to ketone. Here, butan-2-one is formed as follows:
