Solution:

$\underset{\text{ethanol}}{C_2H_5OH} + [O] \xrightarrow{KMnO_4/H^+} \underset{(X) \text{ethanoic acid}}{CH_3COOH}$
$\xrightarrow[H_2SO_4/\Delta\text{(esterification)}]{C_2H_5OH(\gamma)} \underset{\text{ethyl ethanoate}}{CH_3COOC_2H_5}$
Hence, $X = CH_3COOH\,\, Y = C_2H_5OH$
