Q. In the event of pregnancy, the corpus luteum persists under the influence of

AMUAMU 2001

Solution:

Human Chorionic Gonadotropin $(HCG)$ is the proteinaceous hormone which is secreted by placenta for maintaining corpus luteum (and hence, continued secretion of progesterone).
$LH$ (Leuteinizing Hormone) helps in growth and ripening of Graafian follicle. Along with FSH it promotes ovulation. Leuteinization or growth of ruptured follicle occurs under the influence of $LH$. It also controls secretion of progesteron by corpus luteum.
$FSH$ (Follicle Stimulating Hormone) is a proteinaceous gonadotropic hormone secreted by gonadotrophs or gonadotrophic cells of anterior pituitary. The hormone stimulates spermatogenesis in testes, maturation of Graafian follicle/ovarian follicle and secretion of estrogen in ovaries.
Progesteron is a steroid hormone secreted by corpus luteum under the influence of $LH$ of anterior pituitary in the second half of menstrual cycle and $HCG$ of placenta during pregnancy. Progesteron checks ovulation. Hyposecretion results in abortion and misconception.
