Q.
In the electrolysis of which solution, $OH^-$ ions are discharged in preference to $Cl^-$ ions ?
Electrochemistry
Solution:
In very dilute solution of $NaCl$, the following reaction takes place on electrolysis.
Anode $: 2OH^- \rightarrow H_2O + 1/2O_2 + 2e^-$
Cathode $: 2H^+ + 2e^- \rightarrow H_2$
