  • Sharks are marine animals with streamlined body with a cartilaginous endoskeleton.
  • The notochord is persistent throughout life.
  • Mouth and nares are located ventrally. These ventrally situated nostrils can detect a small amount of blood from one kilometer.
  • Teeth are modified placoid scales which are backwardly directed with powerful jaws.
  • The skin is tough, containing minute placoid scales.
  • They have paired fins and lack swim bladder and operculum.
  • They are cold-blooded animals and possess a two-chambered heart.
  • Sexes are separate and show sexual dimorphism. In males pelvic fins bear claspers, which are used in copulation.
  • Internal fertilisation, many are viviparous.
