Sharks are marine animals with streamlined body with a cartilaginous endoskeleton.
The notochord is persistent throughout life.
Mouth and nares are located ventrally. These ventrally situated nostrils can detect a small amount of blood from one kilometer.
Teeth are modified placoid scales which are backwardly directed with powerful jaws.
The skin is tough, containing minute placoid scales.
They have paired fins and lack swim bladder and operculum.
They are cold-blooded animals and possess a two-chambered heart.
Sexes are separate and show sexual dimorphism. In males pelvic fins bear claspers, which are used in copulation.
Internal fertilisation, many are viviparous.
