Union of male and female gametes is termed fertilization. Since the sperms are always motile, these move to the non-motile oocyte cells by whip-like movements of their flagellum-like vibratile tail. Obviously this union can occur only in a fluid medium.
Therefore, male and female gamete forms a cell, which is called zygote.
