Pyruvic acid is formed in both aerobic and anaerobic respiration. In anaerobic respiration, in some yeasts pyruvic acid is broken down into ethyl alcohol (2-carbon compound) and carbon dioxide. In aerobic respiration, pyruvic acid is converted into acetyl CoA through a gateway step or link reaction and enters the Krebs' cycle.
