Photosynthetic oxygen evolving complex, the only known biochemical system, that carries out oxidation of water and forms molecular oxygen. It has been known from many years that the manganese is an essential cofactor in the water oxidation process. Analytical experiments indicate that four $Mn^{2+}$ ions are associated with each oxygen evolving complex.
