An operon consists of a cluster of genes under the control of a single promoter. It possesses an operator, a promoter, a regulator and structural genes.
The regulator gene produces repressor protein which binds to the operator and thus inhibits the transcription of the structural genes (repressor).
It also regulates the transcription of the structural genes (regulator).
The product of the regulator gene is an inhibitor that keeps the operon model turned off.
