Solution:

Fixing the sex of an individual as it begins life is called sex determination. The chromosome theory of sex determination was worked out by EB Wilson and Stevens $(1902-1905)$. Sex chromosomes carry genes for sex. $X$-chromosome carries female determining genes and $Y$-chromosome has male determining genes. The number of $X$ and $Y$ chromosomes determines the female or male sex of the individual. The sex chromosome of father determines the sex of offspring.
