Q. In graphite and diamond, the percentage of p-characters of the hybrid orbitals in hybridisation are respectively :

JEE MainJEE Main 2018The p-Block Elements

Solution:

In graphite, each carbon is $s p^{2}$ hybridised. Therefore, percentage of $p$ -character can be calculated as

$\% \text { of } p \text { character }=\frac{2}{3} \times 100=66.66 \%$

In diamond, each carbon is $s p^{3}$ hybridised. Therefore, percentage of $p$ -character can be calculated as

$\% \text { of } p \text { character }=\frac{3}{4} \times 100=75 \%$
