Q. In germanium crystal, the. forbidden energy gap in joule is :

Delhi UMET/DPMTDelhi UMET/DPMT 2003Semiconductor Electronics: Materials Devices and Simple Circuits

Solution:

Semiconductors are similar to insulators but the conduction and valence bands are spaced closely,
so that at room temperature a number of electrons are found in conduction band.
For germanium, forbidden energy gap $= 0.67\, eV$
$ =6.7 \times 1.6 \times 10^{-19}J $
$ =1.072 \times 10^{-19}J $
$ =1.1 \times 10^{-19}J $
