Fluid mosaic model of the plasma membrane was proposed by Singer and Nicolson. According to this model, the plasma membrane is a phospholipid bilayer in which the proteins, cholesterol and carbohydrates are incorporated which give it a mosaic-like appearance. In phospholipid bilayer, the hydrophilic and polar heads of the lipid molecules are arranged on the outer side and hydrophobic and non-polar tails are arranged on the inner side of the bilayer.
