Bihar CECEBihar CECE 2014General Principles and Processes of Isolation of Elements

Solution:

Chromite or chrome iron ore is $ FeC{{r}_{2}}{{O}_{4}} $ . Its actual composition is $ FeO.C{{r}_{2}}{{O}_{3}} $ . In $ \text{FeO} $ , oxidation state of Fe is calculated as $ x+(-2)=0 $ $ x=+2 $ Similarly, in $ C{{r}_{2}}{{O}_{3}}, $ the oxidation state of Cr is calculated as $ 2\times x+(-2)\times 3=0 $ $ 2x=+6 $ $ x=+3 $
