Producers are photosynthetic organisms and belonging to the first trophic level or T₁. Animals are heterotrophic organisms that cannot manufacture their own food. They obtain food from other sources. Based on their mode of nutrition, they are divided into two types- herbivores and carnivores. Herbivores are consumers of first-order occupying the second trophic level or T₂. The third trophic level is occupied by primary carnivores and later by secondary carnivores and lastly, the top carnivores occupy the fourth/fifth trophic levels. Decomposers do not occupy any trophic level but are involved in decomposing all the organisms of any trophic level.
