Q. In an $AC$ circuit the potential differences across an inductance and resistance joined in series are respectively $16\, V$ and $20\, V$. The total potential difference of the source is

Solution:

$V_{L} = 16 V, V_{R} = 20\, V.$
In the inductor the current lags by $\frac{\pi}{2}$
$\therefore V=\sqrt{V^{2}_{L}+V^{2}_{R}}=\sqrt{256+400}$
$\therefore V_{total}=25.6\,V.$
