Solution:
Pyruvic acid is formed from glucose by the process of glycolysis. It is formed in the last step of glycolysis. It can be converted back to glucose by gluconeogenesis. Pyruvate is the conjugate base (CH3COCOO−) of pyruvic acid and is a key intermediate in several metabolic pathways. It occurs in both aerobic and anaerobic respiration.
Pyruvic acid is used to generate energy in cells through the citric acid cycle and electron transport system when oxygen is present and alternatively ferments to produce lactic acid and ethanol when oxygen is lacking.
The overall reaction of glycolysis can be depicted as
$C_{6}H_{12}O_{6}\left(\right.glucose\left.\right)+2NAD^{+}+2ADP+2Pi \rightarrow 2Pyruvate+2NADH_{2}+2ATP$
