Q. In a reaction $\text{R}\text{C}\text{H}\text{O}$ is reduced to $\text{R}\text{C}\text{H}_{3}$ using amalgamated zinc and concentrated $\text{H}\text{Cl}$ and warmtextng the solution. The reaction is known as

Solution:

In Clemmensen's reduction, aldehyde ( $\text{R}\text{C}\text{H}\text{O}$ ) and ketones ( $\text{R}-\text{C}\text{O}-\text{R}\text{′}$ ) are reduced into hydrocarbons ( $\text{R}-\text{R}$ ').
$\text{R}\text{C}\text{H}\text{O}+6\left[\text{H}\right]\underset{\text{C} \text{o} \text{n} \text{c} . \text{H} \text{C} \text{l}}{\overset{ \, \text{Z} \text{n} \, \text{a} \text{m} \text{a} \text{l} \text{g} \text{a} \text{m} \text{a} \text{t} \text{e} \text{d} \, \, \, }{ \rightarrow }}\text{R}\text{C}\text{H}_{3}+2\text{H}_{2}\text{O}$
