Q. In a plant cell, which of the following pigments participates directly in the light reactions of photosynthesis?

Photosynthesis in Higher Plants

Solution:

Chlorophyll a is the pigment that participates directly in the light reaction of photosynthesis. It absorbs the wavelengths of violet-blue and orange-red light and functions as a primary electron donor during the election transport chain in photosynthesis. It also functions in transporting energy to the reaction centre where $P_{680}$ and $P_{700}$ are located. The 'light-dependent reactions' is the first stage of photosynthesis, in which plants capture and store energy from sunlight. In this process, light energy is converted into chemical energy, in the form of the energy carrying molecules ATP and NADPH.
