The enzyme that restricted the growth of the bacteriophage is called a restriction enzyme. One of the enzymes was methylase which added methyl groups to the adenine base of the DNA thereby restricting or inhibiting the growth of bacteriophage.
Restriction endonuclease is enzymes that cut the DNA at specific sites and eliminating the foreign DNA or infecting organism.
These two groups of restriction enzymes were isolated from E. coli.
