Q. If the ionisation energy and electron affinity of an element are $275$ and $86 \,kcal\, mol^{-1}$ respectively, then the electronegativity of the element on the Mulliken scale is

VITEEEVITEEE 2015

Solution:

According to Mulliken, electronegativity of an atom is average of ionization energy and electron affinity (in eV).
$\ce{ n_m = \frac{IE + EA}{2}}$
If ionization energy and electron affinity are in $kcal\,mol^{-1}$.
$\ce{n = \frac{IE + EA}{125} = \frac{275 + 86}{125} = 288}$
