Q. If the general formula of a metal carbonyl is $ M{{(CO)}_{x}}. $ (where M = metal, $ x=4 $ ) then metal is bonded with

Rajasthan PETRajasthan PET 2006

Solution:

The general formula of metal carbonyl is $ M{{(CO)}_{x}} $ where M = metal and $ x=4 $ Hence, formula of metal carbonyl $ =M{{(CO)}_{4}} $ $ CO-\underset{\begin{smallmatrix} | \\ CO \end{smallmatrix}}{\overset{\begin{smallmatrix} CO \\ | \end{smallmatrix}}{\mathop{M}}}\,-CO $
Therefore, metal atom will be bonded by carbon atom of carbonyl directly.
