Q. If the compressibility of water is $\sigma$ per unit atmospheric pressure, then the decrease in volume ( $V$ ) due to atmospheric pressure $p$ will be

Mechanical Properties of Solids

Solution:

As, $K=\frac{p}{\frac{\Delta V}{V}}$ (Here, $K=$ bulk modulus of elasticity)
or $\frac{1}{K}=\frac{\Delta V / V}{p}$
or $\sigma=\frac{\Delta V}{p V}$
or $\Delta V=\sigma p V$
