Q. If $pK_a = 4$ at a particular temperature then van't Hoff factor, i for 0.01 M monobasic acid is,

Solutions

Solution:

${ }_p K_a=4$
$-\log _{10} K_a=4$
$K_a=10^{-4}$
$H A \xrightleftharpoons{\text { water }}H^{+}+A^{-}$
Initial $0.01 M$
At eqm. $(0.01 - x) M xM xM$
As the solution is quite dilute
$K_a = \frac{x^2}{0.01} = 10^4$
$x^2 = 10^{-2}$
$x = 10^{-1} = 0.1 $
$i = \frac{1-x + x+ x}{1}$
$= \frac{1 + x}{1} = \frac{1 + 0.1 }{1} = 1.1$
