Solution:

Poisson's ratio $ \sigma=\frac{\text{lateral strain}}{\text{longitudinal strain}} $
Given $ \sigma = 0.5$, longitudinal strain $= 0.03$
$=$ Lateral strain $= 0.5 \times 0.03$
$= 0.015$
