Q. If $HNO_{3}$ changes into $N_{2}O $ , the change in oxidation number is:

Delhi UMET/DPMTDelhi UMET/DPMT 2002

Solution:

The sum of oxidation state of all elements in compound is zero.
Let oxidation state of $N=x$
$HNO _{3} N _{2} O +1+x+(-2 \times 3)=0$
$2 x+(-2)=0$
$\therefore x=+5$
$\therefore x=+1$
$\therefore $ Change in oxidation state
$=(+5)-(+1)=+4$
