Q. If $\overrightarrow{ A }=4 \hat{ i }-3 \hat{ j }$ and $\overrightarrow{ B }=5 \hat{ i }-18 \hat{ j }$ then magnitude and direction of $\overrightarrow{ A }+\overrightarrow{ B }$ will be:

Motion in a Plane

Solution:

$|\overrightarrow{ A }+\overrightarrow{ B }|=4 \hat{ i }-3 \hat{ j }+5 \hat{ i }+18 \hat{ j }$
$=9 \hat{ i }+15 \hat{ j }$
$|\overrightarrow{ A }+\overrightarrow{ B }|=\sqrt{(9)^{2}+(15)^{2}}$
$=\sqrt{81+225}=\sqrt{306}=17.49$
$\tan \theta=\frac{15}{9}=\frac{5}{3}$
$\Rightarrow \theta=\tan ^{-1}\left(\frac{5}{3}\right)$
