Q. If $1\, L$ of gas $A$ at $600$ torr and $500\, mL$ of gas $B$ at $1000$ torr are placed in $2\, L$ flask, the final pressure will be

Solution:

The partial pressure of gas $A$
$=\frac{P_{1} V_{1}}{V_{2}}=\frac{600 \text { torr }\times 1000\, mL }{2000 mL }=300 \text { torr }$
Similarly partial pressure of the gas $B=\frac{1000 \text { torr } \times 500\, mL }{2000\, mL }=250$ torr
So total pressure of the mixture $=300$ torr $+250$ torr $=550$ torr.
