Nucleoside consists of two basic components of nucleic acids, i.e. a pentose sugar and nitrogenous base. In this, unit base is attached at $1^{\prime}$ position of sugar and sugar carbons are numbered as $1^{\prime}, 2^{\prime}, 3^{\prime}$ etc., in order to distinguish these from the base.
