Q. Identify the element that forms amphoteric oxide.

MHT CETMHT CET 2018Some Basic Concepts of Chemistry

Solution:

Zn (zinc) element of forms amphoteric oxide i.e. $ZnO$. This oxide reacts with both acids and bases, exhibiting a dual behaviour. They show characteristics of both acidic as well as basic oxides

Following reaotions are given by $ZnO$

$ZnO +2 HCl \to ZnCl _{2}+ H _{2} O $

$ZnO + 8NaOH \to Na _{2 } Zn O _{2}+ H _{2} O$

Note 1 Among oxides, OO is neutral, $CaO$ is basilo and $SO_{2}$ is acidic in nature
