Q. Identify the correct catalyst and reaction conditions for the controlled oxidation of methane to (i) methanol $(X)$, (ii) methanal $(Y)$ and ethane to (iii) ethanoic acid $(Z)$.
(X) (Y) (Z)
(a) $Mo_2O_3/\Delta$ $(CH_3COO)_{2} Mn/\Delta$ $Cu/523 K/100 \,atm$
(b) $Cu/523K/100\,atm$ $Mo_2O_3/\Delta$ $(CH_3COO)_2\,Mn/\Delta$
(c) $(CH_3COO)_2\,Mn/\Delta$ $Cu/523 K/100\, atm$ $Mo_2O_3/\Delta$
(d) $Mo_2O_3/\Delta$ $Cu/523 K/100\,atm$ $(CH_3COO)_{2} Mn/\Delta$

TS EAMCET 2018

Solution:

Methane oxidise into methanol by controlled oxidation in presence of catalyst $Cu/523K/100\,atm$

$CH_3-H \ce{ ->[{Cu[O]/523\,K}][{/ 100 atm}] }CH_3-OH$

Methane show partial oxidation into methanal in presence of $Mn _{2} O _{3} / \Delta$ catalyst.

Ethane oxidise in presence of $Mn ^{+2}$ catalyst (in acetic acid solution) into ethanoic acid.
