Q.
Hybridisation in $CH _{3}, \overset{+}{ C } H _{3}$ and $\overline{ C } H _{3}$ are respectively
AIIMSAIIMS 2001Organic Chemistry – Some Basic Principles and Techniques
Solution:
$CH _{3}$ (methyl free radical) has planar structure with $s p_{2}$ hybridisation of ' $C$ ' atom. The odd electron is present in unhybridised $2 p_{z}$ orbital.
$\overset{\oplus}{C H}_{3}$ (methyl carbonium ion) has also trigonal planar structure ( $s p_{2}$ )
$\overset{\ominus}{C H}_{3}$ (methyl carbanion ion) has tetrahedral structure $\left(s p_{3}\right)$ and one of the hybrid orbital contains the lone pair of electrons.
