The coconut fruit is a fibrous drupe with a tough, greenish exocarp and brown coloured fibrous mesocarp. Coir is the unique fibre obtained from fruit and is used in making various articles like doormats, brushes, floor rugs, mattings, sacks, stuffing seats of buses and trains etc.
Epicarp or exocarp is the outermost layer, which forms the skin of the fruit.
Endocarp is the innermost portion of fruit.
Seed coat is the lignified or fibrous protective covering of seed that develops from the integuments of the ovule after fertilization.
