Q. How many of the total number of compounds that gives positive iodoform test ?
$CH_{3}CH_{2}OH,PhCHO,CH_{3}COCH_{3}$
$\left(\left(CH\right)_{3}\right)_{2}CHOH,HCHO,\left(CH\right)_{3}\left(\left(CH\right)_{2}\right)_{2}\left(COCH\right)_{3}$

Solution:

Positive iodoform test is given by,
$i.$ alcohols containing $\overset{\left|\right.}{\left(\left(CH\right)_{3} - CH - OH\right)}$ group.
$ii.$ acetaldehyde (the only aldehyde) and ketones containing $\left(\left(CH\right)_{3} CO -\right)$ group.
Thus $\left(CH\right)_{3}\left(CH\right)_{2}OH,\left(CH\right)_{3}\left(COCH\right)_{3},\left(\left(CH\right)_{3}\right)_{2}CHOH,\left(CH\right)_{3}\left(\left(CH\right)_{2}\right)_{2}\left(COCH\right)_{3}$ will give positive iodoform test.
