Q. How many of the following species contain $sp^{3}$ hybridized central atom?
$SO_{2}, \, SO_{3}, \, Cl_{2}O, \, H_{2}O, \, SF_{4 ,}ClO_{3}^{-}, \, NO_{3}^{-}, \, CO_{3}^{2 -}, \, PH_{3}, \, XeF_{4}, \, XeO_{3}, \, XeO_{4}$ and $NH_{4}^{+}$ .

Solution:

The following compounds have $sp ^3$ hybridization:
$Cl _2 O , H _2 O , ClO _3{ }^{-}, XeO _3, NH _4{ }^{+}$and $XeO _4$. From the remaining, $PH _3$ would have had an $sp ^3$ hybridization, but it is found that pure orbitals (and not hybrid orbitals) are involved in bonding in $PH _3$ according to Drago's rule.
