Solution:

When $1,2$ -diol like ethylene glycol is treated with $HIO _{4},$ each alcoholic group is oxidised to a carbonyl group by $HIO _{4}$

Since in glycol, both the -$OH$ groups are terminal, so oxidation would yield two formaldehyde molecules.
