Heavy water $ ({{D}_{2}}O) $ is used in nuclear reactors to decrease the speed of neutrons. Heavy water is oxide of heavy hydrogen (deuterium, $ {}_{1}{{H}^{2}} $ ) and is obtained by multi step electrolysis of water.
