Delhi UMET/DPMTDelhi UMET/DPMT 2001
Solution:
Haustorial roots also known as sucking roots, found in parasitic plants like Cuscuta, are the adventitious roots which enter the host plant developing contact with xylem, phloem, to suck food and water from them.
In many epiphytes the aerial roots are covered by a hygroscopic velamen tissue.
They absorb water from the atmosphere, e.g., Epiphytic orchids.
In epiphytic orchids, the roots which arise to fix the plant to the substratum are called as clinging roots.
