CMC MedicalCMC Medical 2008

Solution:

Protonema is slender, green, branched and filamentous gametophytic phase in life cycle of Funaria. It results from the germinating meiospore. It forms a brilliant green, felt-like coating on the damp soil resembling algal growth. Sporogonium represents the sporophytic phase in the life cycle of Funaria. It is differentiated into foot, seta and capsule. Capsule is a highly organized structure. Its upper portion is covered by a conical hood or cap the calyptra. Externally the capsule shows three well marked regions, the apophysis, operculum and theca. Apophysis is solid, swollen, basal green portion of capsule, it is photosynthetic in function. Operculum is an obliquely placed cap-like structure forming the apical portion of capsule. It regulates spore discharge.
