Solution:

During transport, most of $CO_2$ is passed into erythrocytes. A major part (nearly 70%) forms carbonic acid and then bicarbonate.

A seizable portion of bicarbonate passes out into the plasma in return from chloride ($Cl^-$ ). It is called chloride shift or Hamburger’s phenomenon.
